IV Summary.

II.  Alternate Six Million Dollar Ideas – Chaves County

The following is the County Administrative Building project that Chaves County began building in 2000, the same time Kathy Trujillo was trying to push for a six million dollar renovation to our courthouse. Compare the value – Chaves clearly spent its money wisely and got a terrific bargain. The Colfax County courthouse plan was roughly the same cost, at the same time, and was clearly not in the same league with this project. This comparison was KNOWN during all three tax elections and yet Colfax County administration never asked for details or alternative ideas.

Colfax County voters not only defeated the proposed Courthouse Renovation Tax on three separate elections, many were aware that there were better options. Unfortunately, the Colfax Commission of those three elections has/had always assumed the voters were only against the tax, and never seemed aware that voters were also against the Nims, Calvani plan. If a plan such as Chaves County’s were offered to voters here, I believe they would have passed the tax, as they would have seen the obvious advantage.

The District Court Judges and staff are temporarily utilizing the County Clerk’s Office storage area while the County Courthouse in downtown Roswell undergoes renovation.  The storage area has been transformed into courtroom and office space and will be utilized until the courthouse construction is completed.

*** Colfax County already has a separate jail, so if a structure like this was built the 15,613 square feet used by the Sheriff for the jail area plus the 9,681 square feet used for the District Court could be combined to form a substantial Court Area for our Courts.

*** Colfax County Commissioners are currently looking at another plan, which will be discussed below, to house the Courts in 13,785 square feet on 2nd Street in downtown Raton. The total cost of this plan is still unknown, but the County is proceeding with negotiations to buy the site anyway. Rent/lease for the site for 20 years is $2.6 million plus whatever  the purchase price is.
